The Monkey King
About the Performance
"The Monkey King" is a vibrant and acrobatic Beijing Opera adaptation based on episodes from the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West." This performance focuses on Sun Wukong, the mischievous and powerful Monkey King, and his adventures as he accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a pilgrimage to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures.
This particular production highlights three famous episodes: "Havoc in Heaven," where the Monkey King rebels against the Jade Emperor; "Three Battles with the White Bone Demon," where Sun Wukong protects Xuanzang from a shape-shifting demon; and "Subduing the Red Boy," featuring an intense battle with a powerful fire demon.
Beijing Opera performances of the Monkey King are renowned for their spectacular acrobatics, combat choreography, and the distinctive makeup and costume of the Monkey King character. The role requires exceptional physical agility and mastery of various weapons, particularly the Monkey King's signature golden cudgel.
Our production stars award-winning performer Wang Lei, whose portrayal of Sun Wukong has been celebrated for its perfect balance of mischievous humor and martial prowess.
